South Africa didn't bully Pakistan the way Australia did Bangladesh earlier in the day, but thanks to a strong opening stand they posted a competitive total. Graeme Smith led the way with a brisk half-century and Herschelle Gibbs and Albie Morkel contributed cameos picked up off Pakistan's listless pace attack. By the time Younis Khan realised that tacking pace off the ball was the way to go, South Africa's openers had raced out of the blocks.
